Serving in Ethiopia

Ministry Focus: Teaching in a Bible college.

Ministry Overview

Converge World Wide/Baptist General Conference has ministered in Ethiopia for over sixty years. Medicine and education were entry point ministries of compassion which the mission excelled in over the years. Having work permits in these areas which are recognized by the government, allowed us to minister to the whole person in meeting physical needs as well as spiritual needs. Churches were started along with clinics and schools.

I have been privileged to work and live here for 20 plus years, first, as a short term volunteer, and then as a career missionary since 1990. During those years there have been numerous changes. There have been changes within the country itself, in governance, economics, and even its map, and I personally have experienced many changes. Those include changes in ministry, living situations, the personnel with whom I work, job description, and locality.

Originally I was appointed to do medical work in the countryside and lived west of the capital city for thirteen years. We had a clinic there where I oversaw the outreach programs. Health education, immunizations, antenatal checks, clean water and personal and environmental sanitation were the major emphasis of the program. Many churches were planted in the villages in the areas surrounding the clinic.

Since the medical work was handed over a few years ago to the national church to administrate, I have relocated to the capital city of Addis Ababa. I have enjoyed the challenge and change of teaching “Christian Education” and “Ministry to Children and Their Families”, in a small Bible college and helping to strengthen faith development programs and the teaching ministries in the churches of the Ethiopian Berhane Wongel denomination. (An important quality for a missionary to possess, at least from my perspective, is to be flexible and able to trust that God will use you and your gifts in ways that maybe you had not anticipated.)

Your prayers, encouragement and financial support have been great blessings in helping meet the many needs and weathering the changes in ministry as God leads me in service in Ethiopia. Thanks for your partnership.
